Virat Kohli and his squad suffered one of their worst defeats in T20Is on October 24, 2021 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium when they were routed by a strong Pakistani team in the Super 12 stage Group 2 encounter. India fell to Pakistan by 10 wickets for the first time ever in a T20 World Cup match thanks to this result.
But although this is the most heartbreaking loss for Indian cricket, it wasn’t the biggest loss that the powerhouse have faced in the shortest format of the game. With its inception, India have lost a fair few T20Is and some by a big margin as well.
3) India vs New Zealand (2016, 47 runs)
When India batted first, their bowling attack halted the accumulation of runs, limiting New Zealand to 126/7 in 20 overs. Mitchell Santner, in contrast, was the chief wrecker, coming back with 4/11. India was dismissed for 79 runs in 18.1 overs and this is a loss that hurt the Indian team.
On a turning track in India, the home side was expected to get the victory and even had some hope as their skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was at the crease right till the end but the chase proved to be too steep.
2) India vs Australia (2010, 49 runs)
It was a group F match of the third edition of the 20-20 World Cup. Australia’s top-order batters, and arguably three of the greatest batters in the shortest format of the game showed their class as Shane Watson (54 off 32 balls), David Warner (72 off 42 balls), and David Hussey (35 off 22 balls), scored crucial runs for their side.
The trio caused the most damage as they helped Australia end at 184/5. India responded by giving up for 135 in 17.4 overs. This was another heartbreaking loss for the Indian side as they couldn’t complete their full quota of overs.
1) India vs New Zealand (2019, 80 runs)
In the opening game of the series on Wednesday, New Zealand easily defeated the visitors by an 80-run margin, handing India their heaviest loss ever in T20 Internationals. It was a forgetful day for the Indian team at the crease.
Tim Seifert’s 84 off 43 balls propelled New Zealand to a whopping 219/6 when they were asked to bat. He achieved a strike rate of 195.34 when batting in the middle, hitting 7 boundaries and the same number of sixes. India’s response saw them dismissed for a pitiful 139 runs in 19.2 overs.
