Herschelle Gibbs was an explosive player in white-ball cricket. In the South African roster filled with stars, he was one of the most important players for the Proteas. He had a successful career in the 50 overs format and in this article, we will take a look at his top 3 innings in ODI cricket.
175 vs Australia, 2006
Herschelle Gibbs delivered his best batting performance in ODI cricket in arguably the greatest One-Day international match ever. This match was played between Australia and South Africa in Johannesburg and the Kangaroos had scored a mammoth 434 runs batting first. At the start of the second innings, the task seemed impossible but Gibbs started challenging the opposition and the tide gradually started to turn in South Africa’s favour. He scored 175 runs off just 111 balls and laid a solid foundation in the run chase. The Proteas eventually won the match by 1 wicket.
153 vs Bangladesh, 2002
In 2002 Bangladesh toured South Africa for an ODI series. Herschelle Gibbs exploited the slightly weaker bowling unit of Bangladesh and smashed them in every corner of the ground. The Proteas were batting first and it was once again Herschelle Gibbs who led the batting unit from the front. South Africa scored 301 runs in the first innings and more than half of those runs were made by the South African opener. Gibbs ended up with 153 runs and he scored these runs at a phenomenal strike rate of 116.79.
143 vs New Zealand, 2003
Herschelle Gibbs was a special player because he knew how to step up on big occasions. This century was scored by him in the 2003 World Cup against a formidable Kiwi team. South Africa batted first in the match and posted 306 runs. There were no such major contributions apart from Gibbs’ 143-run knock. This was one of those occasions when he stood alone and carried his team to a challenging total.
