In the first game of the two-match Test series in early 2010, the Proteas batted first and amassed 558/6 declared. Amla scored an unbeaten 253 runs in 473 balls including 22 fours in 675 minutes. Apart from him, Jacques Kallis hit 173 and helped the team reach such a total.

In reply, the home side managed only 233 all-out with Virender Sehwag scoring a ton and S Badrinath getting a fifty. They were asked to follow on and managed 319 all-out, losing the game by an innings and six runs. Dale Steyn took seven wickets in the first innings.
