English players with most appearances in The Ashes

The Ashes has been one of the most iconic cricket series which is being played between England and Australia, and over the years, several players have made their mark in this fierce rivalry. The absolute expectation from the fans all around the globe is certainly on a high when these two heavyweights of cricket clash every time in The Ashes series.

Right from the beginning of the Ashes in 1882/83. Here are some of the English players who have made maximum appearances for their national side;

Michael Colin Cowdrey (1954-1975)

Among only a few of the lots who were born in India and then went on to play for England. One such example is MC Cowdrey. He was born in Ooty Tamil Nadu and later on became the first English Cricketer to be given a peerage. This was not it he was also the first man to play 100 Tests and even captained England 27 times.

Throughout his stay in the international arena, Cowdrey played 43 matches in the Ashes series scoring a phenomenal 2433 runs at a healthy average of 34.26 registering 5 centuries in the process. The top-order Batter also registered a high score of 113 throughout the process. 

John Berry Hobbs (1908-1930)

Also known famously by the name of Sir Jack Hobbs was arguably regarded as one of cricket’s most prolific batters who scored 61,237 runs in his first-class career and a record 197 centuries.  He was also known as “The Master” as the prolific Right-hand batter scored consistently throughout his long and illustrious career which interestingly did not end till the batter was past 50.

In a long glorious career, Sir Jack Hobbs made 41 appearances for England’s national side and pilled on 3636 runs at a terrific average of 54.26 along with a resilient 12 centuries to add to his greatness. Meanwhile, the England batter also registered a high score of 187 throughout his Ashes career.

Wilfred Rhodes (1899-1926)

Wilfred Rhodes was a Yorkshire cricket personified in the great period of the county’s domination, as playing for his county club Yorkshire he scored more than 30,000 runs and certainly replicated the same all-round form when he played for England in Ashes.

Wilfred played 41 matches for his national side against the Australian side in the Ashes and went on to score 1706 runs at an average of 31.01 and also taking 109 wickets in the process.
