The Ashes is often regarded as one of the most interesting and anticipated series in the cricketing world right from the time when the first ever series was played in 1882/83. 1. Sydney Edward Gregory (1890-1912)
Sydney Gregory was one of three famous brothers who have been to England on eight different tours and overall played 58 Tests between the years of 1890 and 1912 out of which record 52 of them against England. If the history of the Ashes’ most appearances is considered then, the right batter is by far the player with the most appearances.
In the 52 games that he has represented Australia, the right-hand batter scored 2193 runs at an average of 25.80. Also, his best score throughout his Ashes career was 201 which in fact came on Sydney’s inaugural Test.
2. Stephen Rodger Waugh (1985-2004)
Arguably one of the best captains that have ever played the game of cricket, Steve Waugh was handy with both bat as well as bowl in hand. He was also an integral part of the Australian team who dominated the England side winning 7 consecutive Ashes series from 1989 to 2002/03.
Steve Waugh overall played 45 matches for the Australian side in which the allrounder went on to score 3173 runs at an astonishing average of 58.75 and scoring 10 centuries in the process and also scalping 19 wickets meanwhile.
3. Warwick Armstrong (1902-1921) and Allan Border (1978-1994)
The third position is rightfully shared by two big names in the Australian cricket community, Warwick Armstrong and Allan Border.
Armstrong played 42 matches for the Australian side in which he scored 2172 runs with a healthy average of 35.03 and registered a high score of 158 runs.
Similarly, Allan Border was highly spoken of for his fanatical zeal regarding not giving away his wicket which eventually earned him a reputation as the most durable cricket career of his era. From the World Cup win in 1987 and regaining the Ashes two years later, Australia crusaded under Border
The elegant left-hand batter played 42 matches for the mighty Australians and ended up scoring 3222 runs at an average of 55.55 with seven hundred to his name.
