3 talking points about Delhi Capitals Women campaign in WPL

Delhi Capitals Women became the only team to play three successive WPL finals in all three editions so far. They qualified for the WPL 2025 final, being at the top of the tournament standings in the league stage. Meg Lanning and Co won five games while losing only three in their eight league matches in the tournament’s preliminary stage.

However, once again in an unfortunate turnaround of events, DC-W missed the title as they lost the final by a narrow 8-run margin against the inaugural champions, Mumbai Indians. It was the third consecutive time in the history of the tournament that DC-W fans were disappointed after seeing their team falling short at the last stage.

Given that, here we’ll have a look at 3 talking points about DC’s campaign in WPL, after their third successive final defeat in the tournament.

Third Defeat in WPL Final

It will not sound exaggerating if one says that Delhi Capitals Women have been the most consistent team in the history of the Women’s Premier League as they made it to the final of all the editions played so far. Meg Lanning’s side stayed on the top of the table in the league stage of all three editions so far since the inaugural season in 2023.

However, there is something constantly disappointing in DC’s WPL journey so far and it is their three consecutive WPL final defeat since 2023. In the first edition in 2023, DC-W lost by 7 wickets against MI-W followed by a 8-wicket defeat against RCB-W in WPL 2024 final. Following these two, the recent one came once again against the Mumbai Indians when DC lost the game by a narrow 8-run margin.

Run-Chase struggle in WPL 2025 final

In the WPL 2025 final against Mumbai Indians Women, DC-W skipper Meg Lanning won the toss and asked the hosts to bat first. While bowling first, the DC-W displayed brilliant and disciplined bowling to restrict Harmanpreet Kaur and Co. to the score of just 149 runs for the loss of 7 wickets in the entire 20 overs. Marizanne Kapp bowled a sensational spell, scalping 2 wickets at just 11 runs in her four overs, with an outstanding economy rate of just 2.75.

Besides her, Jess Jonassen and Shree Charani also claimed 2 wickets each, alongside a wicket scalped by Annabel Sutherland. But what happened to cost the match and WPL title for DC-W was their batting collapse and struggle during the run-chase. They kept losing wickets in quick succession and short intervals, due to which they fell 9 runs short to the target and lost the game by 8 runs.

Table toppers for third successive season

Apart from the disappointment of a defeat in the WPL 2025 final, what caught the eyeballs and attention of the cricket experts and the fans of the game was the consistent performance of Delhi Capitals Women throughout all the editions of the tournament so far.

It was for the third successive time in the Women’s Premier League when DC-W ended up on their league stage journey at the top of the points tally. In the inaugural edition in 2023, they won six games while losing two in their eight league matches followed by the same number of wins and losses in the next edition in WPL 2024. Following these two editions, DC-W finished once again on top, with five wins and three wins in their eight league matches in the recently concluded WPL 2025.
