The 2023 ODI World Cup is just months away and every team is preparing hard for the marquee tournament. The schedule for the tournament is out and there is enough hype for it already. The Indian team’s preparation has started on a good note, as the men in blue beat West Indies 2-1 in the ODI series. In the upcoming days, the Indian team will be playing the Asia Cup 2023, where they will face one of the top sides like Pakistan and other teams like Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. After the Asia Cup, India will face Australia. Here are some of the star players who might miss out on the Indian squad of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
1. Yuzvendra Chahal
This might be one of the most shocking picks. But given how the teams are selected, Chahal might not find a place. For starters, Chahal is only a good leg spinner. The 33-year-old is incapable of batting and is a mediocre fielder. The selectors will be looking to fit in as many versatile players as possible. The other spinners like Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, and Axar Patel contribute with the bat and are much better fielders as well. Hence, Chahal might not make the cut in the eventual squad.
2. Bhuvneshwar Kumar
The 33-year-old was India’s leader of the attack in the 2019 ODI World Cup. In the 2015 ODI World Cup, Bhuvneshwar was one of the leading pacers in the Indian lineup. But lately, Kumar is not preferred in the Indian ODI team. The medium pacer has lost his pace and proved to be ineffective on many occasions. With much better pacers in the ranks like Mohammed Shami, Mohammad Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah, the Meerut-born bowler might not be in India’s final squad.
3. Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan is well known for his performances in the big tournaments. The Southpaw was the player of the Tournament in back-to-back Champions Trophy Tournaments in 2013 and 2017. The opening batter was India’s highest run scorer in the 2015 ODI World Cup. But due to the lack of aggression at the top in the last few matches, and the emergence of Shubman Gill, Dhawan might be left out of the Indian squad.
