3 reasons why Virat Kohli can win the Player of the Tournament award

India’s star cricketer Virat Kohli has been in sensational form in the ongoing ODI World Cup 2023. The stylish right-handed batter has been the leading run scorer in the tournament and has broken several records in the process. Virat became one of the fewest Indian batters to score a World Cup hundred in the knockout stage, as he achieved the feat against New Zealand in the semifinal match along with middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer.

Here are three reasons why Virat Kohli could win the player of the tournament award:

1. 700 plus runs in the tournament

In 10 innings so far in the tournament, Virat has a whopping 711 runs to his name. For the first time in the history of World Cups, a batter has been able to score more than 700 runs in a single edition of the World Cup. It is a great feat and seems hard to replicate. As number 3, Virat has done a great job of anchoring the innings for India. As Rohit Sharma gives fiery starts from his end, Virat has provided stability at the other end and boosted the middle order.

2. Eight fifty-plus scores in the tournament

So far in the tournament, Virat has eight fifty-plus scores to his name. Three of them have been converted to 3-digit marks by Virat. On five other occasions, Virat got past the 50-run mark. In those fifties, three of them were above 80 runs. Such a level of consistency is incredible and isn’t often achieved by individuals. To do that on the biggest stage of cricket is exceptional, to say the least.

3. Performances in Knockouts

One of the biggest criticisms of Virat over the years has been his not-so-good record in the knockout stage of the World Cups. Virat has otherwise been good in bilaterals, in the Champions Trophy, and in the T20 World Cup. But this time around, Virat totally took it on the bowlers. Against New Zealand, Virat got a hundred in the semifinal, which is a huge feat. Not many Indian batters have been able to do it in the past.
