3 reasons why Shreyas Iyer is a much better choice as skipper than Rishabh Pant for PBKS

3 reasons why Shreyas Iyer is a much better choice as skipper than Rishabh Pant for PBKS

Punjab Kings have made a solid start to their IPL 2025 campaign with two wins and one loss so far. PBKS began the season with wins over Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants away from home. That winning run was stopped when Rajasthan Royals beat Punjab at the Mullanpur stadium by 50 runs on Saturday.

One of the biggest reasons behind PBKS’ success so far has been the captaincy of Shreyas Iyer. The 30-year-old was picked by Punjab for INR 26.75 Crores during the Auctions after leading Kolkata to the much awaited third IPL title after a decade. Iyer has also led Delhi to the finals of the IPL in 2020 to show his captaincy credentials.

Here are the 3 reasons why Shreyas Iyer is a better captaincy choice than Rishabh Pant

3. Taking calculated decisions for the sake of his team

Shreyas Iyer began the season with an unbeaten 97 in the game against Gujarat. Shashank played the entire final over and Iyer didn’t get a chance to make his hundred. This is one such example that sets Iyer above Pant in terms of captaincy in the IPL. When we speak about Iyer’s captaincy, he is known to take decisions for the larger good of the game. Over the years, Iyer has been known to go by his instincts and on many occasions it has proven to come out right.

2. Cool under pressure

It isn’t to say that Pant isn’t cool but the LSG skipper can crack when put under extreme pressure. Pant missed a key stumping in the first ball of the final over against Delhi that decided the fate of the game. Iyer on the other hand doesn’t seem to panic when the going gets tough and comes up with a different plan according to the situation. This was seen during his time with Delhi and KKR where his handling of tense situations were seamless and effective.

1. Leads from the front

Many fans have often marvelled at the way captaincy brings the best out of Shreyas Iyer. The 30-year-old played two match winning knocks for PBKS at the start of the season. Pant, on the other hand has managed to score just 19 runs from his four games so far. Iyer, had also played a key role with the bat during Delhi’s run to the finals in 2020 and when KKR won the title in 2024. It is the same thing with Iyer’s start to life as PBKS skipper as he is a key member of the side with the bat and can score runs at good pace and put the bowlers under pressure.
