3 reasons why Shreyas Iyer can do well in Duleep Trophy 2024 

With the Indian team set to play 10 Test matches in the next few months, the upcoming Duleep Trophy will hold huge significance. The tournament is set to witness the big names of Indian cricket take part. One of the names on the list is India D skipper Shreyas Iyer who last played a Test match against England earlier this year. 

India D will take on India C in the first match of the tournament at the Anantapur stadium. Shreyas Iyer was given a rousing welcome from the local fans but the 29-year-old will know that he has a lot to do. 

Shreyas Iyer started his Test career with a bang as he scored a century on debut versus New Zealand. Since then, it has been a downward spiral as the Mumbai-based batter has been troubled by the short ball time and again.

There is no doubt that Shreyas Iyer has been one of the best batters in home conditions. His ability against the spinner makes him one of the best modern-day Indian batters against the slower bowlers. With spin set to dominate proceedings as the tournament progresses, Shreyas Iyer can be a handful with the bat. 

2- One of the best domestic batters 

Shreyas Iyer has played a total of 72 First class matches and scored 5664 runs. The batter has hit 13 centuries and 30 fifties with an average of 48. His best of 202 came against Australia ahead of the 2017 home test series. With such a record in domestic cricket with most of the matches coming at home, Shreyas Iyer will want to make the best use of the Duleep Trophy 2024 season. 

1- Excels when given a leadership role 

Shreyas Iyer has been an underrated captain but his record is certainly on the rise. The 29-year-old led Delhi Capitals to the finals of the IPL in 2020 before losing to Mumbai Indians. His wait for an IPL title was over after KKR beat Hyderabad in the final during the IPL 2024 season. Shreyas Iyer has been a player who has done well whenever there is responsibility placed on his shoulder. With Iyer leading the India D side, there is set to be lots of one-upmanship and this is where Iyer will look to do well and excel and come out on top.
