3 reasons why Sanju Samson not being RR’s captain in the first few games will hurt them

3 reasons why Sanju Samson not being RR's captain in the first few games will hurt them

The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) finally kicked off on March 22. Most of the teams have also played their first matches and one of the teams who have played their first match is Rajasthan Royals (RR). They clashed against Sunrisers Hyderabad in their first IPL 2025 encounter on March 23.

However, their bowlers were brutally smashed for boundaries by SRH batters, who posted a humongous total of 286 runs in the first innings. RR batters tried hard to chase the target but fell 44 runs short. One of the reasons for their loss could be the original skipper Sanju Samson not leading the side. He will not lead the side in another couple of matches. Let’s take a look at the three reasons why Samson not being RR’s captain in the first few games will hurt them.

1. Inexperienced leadership option

Due to a lack of experienced captaincy choices, RR appointed Riyan Parag as their skipper for the first few matches. Till the previous season, RR used to have players like Jos Buttler and R Aswhin in their side but they released them ahead of the mega auction. They have Nitish Rana now who have captained Kolkata Knight Riders in some matches but they decided to go with Parag.

2. Can affect his batting form

Samson has done a great job with the bat while leading the side. He has produced some great knocks while opening the batting in previous seasons of the league. However, not captaining the team and playing solely as a batter could affect his mindset and, in turn, his form. That said, he batted brilliantly in RR’s first IPL clash, scoring 66 runs off 37 balls but nothing can be said for the upcoming matches.

3. Impact on Winning Momentum Early in the Season

RR lost their first match of the season and their bowlers were thrashed brutally by all the SRH batters. Parag wasn’t good enough with the bowling changes as he brought Tushar Deshpande, who is a proper pacer, after nine overs of the innings. Interestingly, Deshpande ended up being the best bowler of the match for RR. Samson’s absence as a captain would definitely hurt the team as getting wins during the initial stage of the league is very important and without his guidance, it is hard to say that they would be winning any of the upcoming matches.
