Sam Konstas has taken the Cricket world by storm right from his maiden Test innings. At a young age of 19, the young batter made his Test debut against one of the best teams in the world and scored 60 runs in 65 balls when the series was on the line in a Boxing Day Test match in front of a crowd of over 85000 people. Konstas showed no fear and took on some of the best bowlers in the world.
Given how Australia has been aging for a long time, the addition of a young talent helped them big time. The talented batter might have everything it takes to be a star in the making. He might be the player Australia was looking for as David Warner’s replacement. There is a good chance of him getting a long rope in the Australian team. Sam has already impressed fans and critics from a single innings.
Here are the three reasons why Sam Konstas might be a star for Australia in the future –
Fearlessness
Nathan Lyon in the post-match conversation claimed what Sam Konstas spoke with him before making his Test debut. The star spinner revealed the 19-year-old asked when the nerves would kick in, as he felt it to be a grade game. To not just treat a Boxing Day Test match as a normal game, but to prove it by his batting showed his mentality.
Sam treated the big game to be a normal game. He was fearless and did not hesitate to take on the best bowlers in the world. Konstas smashed Jasprit Bumrah for 18 runs in an over. He was the first batter to smash a six off Bumrah’s bowling in Tests in over 4000 days. He was ready to take risks for the side and gave a great platform for the middle order batters.
Aggression
In his very first Test innings, Konstas scored 60 runs in 65 balls. It was one of the fastest Test fifties registered by an Australian batter on debut. Even in the Prime Minister’s XI’s match against India, he was Australia’s best batter. In both the innings, aggression was visible in his way of play. Aggressive batters can often change the complexion of a Test in a matter of a session or so.
It is said that attack is the best form of defence. On the surfaces that are tricky to bat on, batting with intent might be key for the batters. Konstas certainly bats with intent. The fact that he is just 19, looks ready, and has a long career ahead of him shows there is more room for improvement. When Sam goes on to be Australia’s mainstay, he could do what someone like Matthew Hayden used to.
Skill Sets
Konstas is someone who is aggressive by nature. His game has a mix of orthodox and unorthodox shots. He can play classical shots like cover drive, on drive, flick shots, cut, and pull shots. Likewise, he can also play ramp shots, scoop shots, reverse scoop shots, switch hits, and reverse switch hits. It seems like his armour has a variety of shots.
Against Jasprit, he hit a scoop shot and a reverse scoop shot of the deliveries that came at him at a pace of over 144 kmph. He did not have a second thought before taking on the bowlers. Such aggression is the key for success in limited overs cricket. Konstas might have everything it takes to be an all-format great. Only time will tell if he can be one of the greatest modern day batters.
