3 reasons why Punjab Kings retained only two players ahead of IPL mega auction

3 reasons why Punjab Kings retained only two players ahead of IPL mega auction

There have been many big decisions made by some of the IPL franchises during the retention. One of the decisions that surprised us the most was from the Punjab Kings(PBKS), who retained two uncapped players from their squad namely Prabhsimran Singh and Shashank Singh. There are some big names that they have let go going into the upcoming auction and let us look at the reason for this decision.

The Punjab Kings(PBKS) are one of the underachieving franchises in the IPL who have not had a lot of success in the tournament in the last 18 years. The team will now be coached by the legendary Ricky Ponting and this time they have gone into the auction with a very unique approach and mindset. It will be interesting to see what plans they have for the upcoming 2025 season.

So, here are the 3 reasons behind Punjab Kings approach going into the auction:

1. Finding a new and stronger core

The Punjab Kings have struggled to find a strong core in their team in the last few seasons. The last season was also a big struggle for them. With the retention of two uncapped players who have come at a small sum, they have enough money and RTMs to build a new and stronger core to come back stronger next season to make sure they finally get their hands on the title.

2. More money means endless strategies

This move by Punjab Kings has made it possible for the franchise to make some new strategies. With over 110 cr in their budget, they cannot only buy a lot of big players but also force other players to overspend as well. This has given them enough time to set their strategies and look into which players can make their squad look stronger in the upcoming 2025 season of the Indian Premier League.

3. Promoting young and upcoming players

The retention plan for most teams features some big stars of international cricket but upcoming and young players like Prabhsimran and Shanshank being retained ahead of big names like Shikhar Dhawan and Arshdeep Singh has created a lot of hype for the two uncapped players. Promoting young players can sometimes lead to new stars coming up and this might be one of the best ways to do it.
