Punjab Kings will head into the IPL 2025 mega auctions looking to make massive investments into the squad. The retirement of Shikhar Dhawan means that the team will have to reinvest in a big-name player once more. Along with Delhi and Bengaluru, Punjab is the only original set of teams that has yet to win the league.
During every IPL Auction, Punjab Kings make huge purchases. One of their biggest purchases during the IPL 2023 auction was that of English star Sam Curran. The all-rounder was one of the best players in England’s 2022 T20 World Cup win.
Sam Curran since his move to Punjab Kings hasn’t had a consistent time with the bat and ball. The English star replaced Shikhar Dhawan as the captain of the side once the veteran Indian star got injured.
Here are the three reasons why Sam Curran could be let go by PBKS ahead of IPL 2025 auctions
3- Inconsistency with bat and ball
Since his move to Punjab Kings, Sam Curran has played 27 matches and scored 546 runs. The England star has also hit 3 fifties but this wasn’t enough for Punjab as they failed to qualify for the playoffs each time. With the ball, Sam Curran picked 26 wickets which is less than a wicket per game. His economy rate each season has been above 10 runs per over.
2- Need for a bigger foreign name
There is a big chance that Punjab Kings could look to buy a bigger international player. With the market set to be open during the IPL 2025 Auctions, there is a possibility that Punjab could look to bring a much better all-rounder into the fold. They would be looking at a matchwinner who could turn the course of the game with the bat and ball and help them win the title.
1- High chance of being picked with the Right to match card for a lesser price
Considering that the base price for Sam Curran could be high, most teams may opt to pick him during the latter part of the auctions. Punjab Kings will want to use the right-to-match card and pick Sam Curran for a lesser price to save money. This is a strategy that could be used in a bid to release Sam Curran ahead of IPL 2025 auctions.
