The inaugural Champions of the Women’s Premier League, Mumbai Indians Women (MI-W) took on the Delhi Capitals Women (DC-W) in the final of the recently concluded WPL 2025. Notably, it was the record third consecutive appearance in the WPL final for Delhi Capitals Women but they lost another final and missed the chance of lifting their maiden title in the tournament.
On the other hand, Harmanpreet Kaur’s MI-W won the summit clash by a narrow 8-run margin to clinch their second WPL title since they won it for the first time in the inaugural edition of the tournament.
The 3 reasons why MI-W won against DC-W in the WPL final clash:
Team’s Consistency
In the league stage of the tournament, Mumbai Indians Women were one of the most consistent teams in the tournament, alongside the league table toppers, Delhi Capitals Women. MI won five matches while losing three in their eight league matches. After losing their first match to DC-W, MI-W registered three consecutive wins to get up in the table.
Furthermore, they registered two more wins to finish in the second spot on the tournament standings. Later in the knockout stage, they defeated Gujarat Giants Women to seal the spot in the tournament’s summit clash, where they outplayed DC-W to lift the title. So, the consistency of Mumbai Indians Women was one of the main reasons behind their title win in the tournament, beating DC-W in the final.
Nat Sciver-Brunt and Hayley Matthews’ all-round performances
Apart from team efforts, there were two star performers for Mumbai Indians Women (MI-W) both with the bat and the ball throughout the entire tournament. Here, we are talking about star all-rounders, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Hayley Matthews; they left an impressive mark with their outstanding batting and bowling performances.
Nat Sciver-Brunt ended up as the leading run-scorer in the entire tournament and registered the record of scoring the most runs in a single WPL edition. She scored 523 runs in 10 innings, including two unbeaten appearances and had an amazing average of 65.37, hitting five half-centuries. Besides that, she also scalped 12 wickets in 10 innings, with the ball, including the best performance of ‘3 wickets at just 18 runs in a game.’ She also continued her brilliant run of form in the final against DC-W.
Apart from Sciver-Brunt, star all-rounder Hayley Matthews scored 307 runs in 10 innings, hitting three half-centuries. She also scalped 18 wickets in 10 innings with the ball, including the best performance of ‘3 wickets at just 16 runs in a game.’
Familiarity with conditions at home
Apart from all the other reasons behind their win against Delhi Capitals Women in the title clash, an important reason was that they played most of their matches in home conditions, especially at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
So, the familiarity to the home conditions played a vital role in MI-W’s success in the final against DC-W as the game was played on the same venue where they were winning their league matches earlier.
