3 reasons why MS Dhoni should be retained by CSK ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction

Having led Chennai Super Kings to record five IPL titles and amassed over 5000 runs, MS Dhoni is one of the greatest cricketers in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He gave the captaincy baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the last season and continued to play in the yellow jersey as a keeper-batter.

His participation in IPL 2025 is still uncertain, but the legendary cricketer is rumored to appear for one more season. It is also learned that CSK has requested the IPL governing body to bring back the old rule – the uncapped category – which would have helped the franchise retain the 43-year-old.

1. Ability to provide a blazing finish 

MS Dhoni managed to silence his critics to some extent with some scintillating finishes for the franchise last season. Batting lower-down despite not being fully fit, the right-hander scored 161 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 220.55. He usually comes to the crease in the last two overs and can do the duty despite not wasting the balls. 

2. Can groom captain Gaikwad and new additions

Although CSK marginally missed out on qualifying for the playoffs last season, Ruturaj Gaikwad’s captaincy on his debut was highly praised. Spending one more season with MS Dhoni will further shape the young opener. Moreover, the keeper-batter can nurture new additions who will arrive after the mega auction. 

3. To avoid a sudden drop in fanbase 

CSK is one of the franchises with a huge fan following and the primary reason is the presence of fans’ beloved ‘Thala’. His absence can take a huge toll on the fanbase of the franchise.
