Lucknow Super Giants lost a thriller against Delhi Capitals in Match four of the Indian Premier League at VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vishakhapatnam. The hosts, Delhi Capitals, won the toss and elected to field first. Lucknow Supergiants got off to a flying start with Mitchell Marsh and Nicholas Puran scoring quickfire 70s. Lucknow managed to post a healthy total of 209 runs despite lacking a strong finish from their lower-order batters. Delhi Capitals won the match with 3 balls to spare, courtesy of an incredible innings from uncapped Ashutosh Sharma. Hence, Delhi opened their scoring account in their first fixture.
Here are three reasons why Lucknow Supergiants lost to Delhi Capitals
3. Poor performance from the Spinners
The pitch offered a lot of assistance to the spinners of Delhi Capitals in the first innings. Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel were economical and conceded runs at less than 6 runs per over. Kuldeep Yadav also picked two crucial wickets for Rishabh Pant and Ayush Badoni. Unlike them, LSG spinners failed to make the most of the assistance from the pitch. The leg-spinning duo of Ravi Bishnoi and Digvesh Singh conceded 84 runs off their 8 overs. Left-arm orthodox spinner Shahbaz Ahmed also conceded 23 runs off his 9 deliveries which ultimately cost LSG their opening match.
2. Dismal death bowling
While Delhi Capitals dragged the match towards their side via an incredible death-bowling performance, it was just the opposite for LSG. While Shardul Thakur didn’t bowl in the penultimate overs, Pravin Thakur leaked runs at an economy of over 11 runs per over. The Delhi-born pacer failed to make any impact as his wicket columns remained zero by the end of the match.
1. The Finishers failed to Finish
Lucknow Supergiants once looked set to cross the 230 runs mark while Mitchel Marsh and Nicholas Puran smashed Delhi bowlers all over the park. However, their departure in quick succession required the lower-middle-order finishers to end the innings on a high note. David Miller was the only one who appeared to carry out his role; however, with little to no support from Ayush Badoni, Shardul Thakur and Shahbaz Ahmed, the proteas star could only switch strikes for most of the final overs. Lucknow managed to score only 76 runs in the last 8 overs, a testimony to their poor finishing.
