3 reasons why India should play Arshdeep Singh in Champions Trophy 2025 semi-final against Australia

Eyes of the cricketing world are set to be trained on the Dubai International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday. India and Australia who have had an amazing rivalry will contest the first semi-final match of the Champions Trophy 2025 tournament. It is a game between two sides who have naturally attacking batters and bowlers with natural flair and wicket taking abilities.

Arshdeep Singh was thought to be the front-line seamer for India along with Mohammed Shami ahead of the tournament. Harshit Rana was given preference ahead of Arshdeep for the game against Bangladesh and Pakistan. In the final league match against New Zealand, the team management decided to play Varun Chakravarthy who grabbed a fifer.

Top three reasons why Arshdeep Singh should play in the CT26 Semis vs Australia:

Offering different elements with the ball

So far, India has gone in with two pacers in Shami and Harshit, with Hardik as the third seam option. Arshdeep’s inclusion will mean that the Indian side will be playing a left-arm seamer who can swing the ball into the right-handed batters and take the ball away from the left-handed batters. Arshdeep Singh, over the years, has shown that he can trouble the batters with his natural swing. In nine ODI matches, Singh has picked 14 wickets, which also includes a fifer.

To counter Travis Head’s threat

Taking the early wicket of Australian opener Travis Head will be key for India. The 31-year-old can take the game away from the opposition once he gets going. Arshdeep Singh has twice dismissed the Head with the new ball. That dismissal came during the IPL 2024 season, during which Head was in great form with the bat. Arshdeep has the ability to bowl at the stumps and beat the batter with his swing. Head, who is known to be a nervous starter, can be dismissed by Arshdeep when the ball is new.

Possible replacement for Mohammed Shami?

Indian pacer Mohammed Shami didn’t bowl a lot of overs in the game against New Zealand on Sunday. Shami was hit on his arm when he was trying to take the second run, thanks to a wayward throw from the Kiwi fielders. While spin did play a huge role in the last match, Shami seemed out of sorts with the ball in hand. This will be a great chance for Indian team management to take a punt and play Arshdeep in the huge game against Australia.
