Gujrat Titans lost a close encounter against Punjab Kings in match five of the Indian Premier League at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The hosts won the toss and elected to field first. Punjab Kings got off to a flying start despite losing one of their openers early in the innings. Punjab’s new captains, Shreyas Iyer and Priyansh Arya, dealt with boundaries to keep the run rate above 9 runs at all times. Shreyas scored an unbeaten 97 runs off 42 balls hitting 5 boundaries and 9 sixes. Shashank Singh provided a perfect finish to Punjab Kings with his quickfire knock of 44 runs in 20 deliveries. Punjab Kings set a mammoth target of 244 runs for the hosts. Gujrat Titans came close but fell short by 11 runs on their home ground. Hence, Punjab Kings opened their scoring account in their first fixture.

3. ‘Impact player’ failed to make any Impact

After Gujrat Titans won the toss and elected to field first, the captain, Shubman Gill, introduced his impact substitute – the Speedster Praseedh Krishna into the attack. However, the fast bowler conceded runs at an economy of nearly 14 runs an over. Krishna didn’t even get to complete his quota of four overs as he was hit all over the park by Shreyas Iyer and Shashank Singh. Krishna not only conceded runs but also failed to scalp any wicket which added to the woes of Gujrat’s death bowling.

2. Finishers didn’t do their job

Gujrat was off to a flying start in their chase. Captain Shubman Gill and opener Sai Sudarshan steered the team past the 50-run mark in the fifth over. However, once Gujrat lost its top three batters and it was down to the middle order and finishers to complete the job, they miserably failed. Rutherford wasted many deliveries outside off stump in an attempt to heave them away into stands. Rahul Tewatia also got caught out on his second ball and failed to make his team cross the line.

1. Losing wickets at the wrong moments

Gujrat’s chase was characterized by the loss of key wickets at regular intervals. This trend started on the 13th over when Sai Sudarshan got caught out for 74 runs. Later, with Gujrat needing 45 runs in the last two overs, settled batsman Jos Butler lost his stumps to Marco Jansen. The trend followed in the final over where Rahul Tewatia fell short of his crease in the very first delivery of the 20th over. Losing wickets at the wrong intervals cost Gujrat Titans their home match.
