3 reasons why DC can let go of Prithvi Shaw ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction

3 reasons why DC can let go of Prithvi Shaw ahead of IPL 2025 mega auction

The auction for the next season of the Indian Premier League is looming large over the teams. According to the reports, teams will only have a handful of retentions allowed owing to the mega auction which is in the works. As a result, teams may have to let go of some of their key players.

The teams will now look to restructure their squads and build a new core around the limited players they can retain. One of the players that might have to face the axe is Delhi Capitals’ Prithvi Shaw.

Here are the reasons why DC can let go of Prithvi Shaw ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction:

1. Using RTM to reacquire him for a cheaper price

Managing the purse value during the IPL auction becomes very important for the teams as the plans can dramatically change in player battles. Shaw is currently paid 7.5 crores by the Delhi Capitals per season and may be let go and repurchased by using the RTM card for a cheaper price. This could save the team a few crores which they could use to bag another player.

2. Fitness issues

Modern-day cricket demands players to be very fit and show athleticism on the field. However, there have been many issues with Shaw’s fitness over the years, which could be a major factor in deciding his future. The 2020 finalist would want players who have proved their match fitness in their core lineup.

3. Poor performance in recent seasons

While the Mumbai-born cricketer has had a fair share of success in his early days in the IPL, he has not met the expectations in the last two seasons. Since 2023, he has only scored 304 runs in the 16 games that he has played, including two half-centuries. His lack of consistency may be the biggest reason for him to be let go by the Delhi Capitals.
