3 reasons that led to Rohit Sharma dropping himself from SCG Test against Australia, BGT 2024/25

3 reasons that led to Rohit Sharma dropping himself from SCG Test against Australia, BGT 2024/25

Rohit Sharma dropped himself from the fifth Test of the series against Australia in the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024/25. The star player was replaced by Shubman Gill in the Playing XI. The Indian management chopped and changed the positions of a lot of batters as KL Rahul did well in the presence and absence of Rohit. The skipper himself couldn’t find the touch and decided to make a call on himself.

However, it would not be a straight decision. There would have been a lot of reasons behind taking the massive step, especially when the team wanted an experienced batter like him. When the series is on the line, a player like Rohit can be trusted to deliver the goods. But despite such a factor, Rohit decided to drop himself. There are three main reasons behind the veteran dropping himself from the side.

Coach’s call

This may or may not be a reason. But given how Rohit has been batting in the series, someone had to remind him of his struggles as a batter. The Indian coach backed by the management could have let Rohit know about his struggles as a batter which could have led to Sharma thinking about his situation in the side. With the series on the line, a big decision had to be made.

Better alternatives

Rohit has arguably been the worst batter of the series. His best score in an innings was 10 and he failed to register a double digit score on all other instances. There might be instances where the player could not be dropped due to a lack of alternatives. But in this case, India has an alternative in Shubman Gill, who could replace him. On seaming and bouncy wickets, Gill is usually a better choice than Rohit.

Poor form

More than anything, Rohit has been poor with the bat for the entire series. The star batter played 5 innings and scored just 31 runs at a batting average of just 6.20 and a batting strike rate of 28.18. These are poor numbers for any individual. His best score in the series was 10 and he never looked fluent in the middle. While it could be harsh, Sharma was a liability as a batter for India. Hence, he had to drop himself.
