Punjab Kings is one of the few franchises that has played all the seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Since 2008, the team has reached the semis and finals one time each. In the inaugural season, the team, led by Yuvraj Singh reached the semis. Six years later, the team, led by Goerge Bailey qualified for their maiden final.
Apart from these seasons, PBKS hasn’t been able to do as per expectations from their fans. Over the years, they have had good players but the team hasn’t been able to do well. Meanwhile, there have been a lot of players who have played for the Mohali-based team who are unknown to the fans. In this listicle, we will discuss three players who played for the team but fans hardly know.
Three players who played for Punjab Kings whom fans don’t know
1. Stuart Broad
Not many fans know this but the English pacer was signed by the 2014 finalists for the 2011 season. That was the first and only time when he was signed in the cash-rich league. Even his Test match bowling partner, James Anderson was going unsold previously.
Meanwhile, Broad couldn’t play the tournament for unknown reasons. He was the third English player to get signed by any IPL team. Before him, Kevin Pietersen and Ravi Bopara were the first two English players who played the league at the time.
2. Simon Katich
The former Australia opening batter is known to have coached teams such as Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore in the last few years. However, he also played for the PBKS in the first two seasons of the league. He didn’t play in the 2010 season although he was part of the team.
He and Ramnaresh Sarwan didn’t play in the third season and had a dispute with the franchise for their season fee. As reported by ESPNcricinfo 13 years back, the Indian Cricket Board and IPL didn’t respond to the calls from FICA over the pay dispute.
The former West Indies player also featured for the Kings in the first three seasons. Despite being regarded as a long-format player, the team had faith in his abilities as a T20 player.
In recent years, he was part of the coaching setup in the Jamaica Tallawahs side, working with one of his former West Indies teammates, Chris Gayle. However, during that season, Gayle and Sarwan had disagreements.
