The 2023 edition of the iconic Ashes series finally came to an end on July 31. The thrilling series ended in a 2-2 tie. Unfortunately, the 4th Test got washed out by rain otherwise the result would probably have been different. There were some phenomenal individual performances from both teams.
Mitchell Starc was named Player of the Series from Australia, while from England, it was Chris Woakes who won the award. But there were other players who were also the contender to win the award. We will take a look at the 3 players who deserved to win Player of the Series in Ashes 2023.
1. Usman Khawaja
Australia’s left-handed opening batter Usman Khawaja was the highest run-scorer in the Asehs 2023 series. Khawaja played all 5 matches and scored 496 runs at an average of 49.60, which included 3 half-centuries and 1 century. He was also the player who face the most number of deliveries in the series, which was 1263. With the brilliant batting performance throughout the series, Khawaja definitely deserved to become Player of the Series.
2. Zak Crawley
England’s destructive opening batter Zak Crawley was the second-highest run-scorer of the series. He scored 480 runs in 5 matches of the series at a brilliant average of 53.33, which included 2 fifties and 1 century. He could have also hit a double century in the 4th Test but fell 11 runs short of the milestone. If he could have achieved the milestone, then he might be in the place of Woakes.
3. Pat Cummins
Australian skipper and their premium fast bowler Pat Cummins delivered a superb performance with the ball in the series. He also displayed a decent performance with the bat as well. Cummins took 18 wickets in the series and also scored 162 runs. His unbeaten 44-run knock in the 1st Test of the series helped Australia to win a thrilling contest by just 2 wickets. His all-round performance in the series makes him one of the contenders to win the Player of the Series award.
