T20 internationals will not be the same again. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma – the two modern-day greats – have bid farewell to the format after their historic World Cup triumph. It was a fairytale ending for the Indian star duo. A T20 World Cup title was missing from Kohli’s portfolio and now he has won almost everything in the game.
Kohli won the Player of the Match award in his last T20I match and ended his career with 4188 runs from 125 matches. It will be difficult for the Indian management to find a suitable replacement for someone who can pull the team out of a batting collapse. However, India have a good bench strength and they will hope to fill that big void.
3. Tilak Varma
Tilak Varma has been a star performer for Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the past few years. In fact, he is one of the most consistent batters in the middle order of the five-time champions. The southpaw has played 16 T20Is so far and has scored 336 runs at an average of 33.6 and a strike rate of 139.42.
2. Sai Sudharsan
Sai Sudharsan is another good option at number three. With his brilliant performances for Gujarat Titans (GT) in the last two IPL seasons, a national call-up to the T20I team is not far off. Although GT lost to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2023 final, Sudharsan’s 96 off 47 balls was well-praised. The southpaw was the sixth-highest run-getter in the 2024 season, scoring 527 runs at an average of 47.91, including a century.
1. Sanju Samson
Sanju Samson has been one of the finest performers in the IPL over the years. His experience as a batter and leading Rajasthan Royals will be a great asset to the team going forward. He is a versatile batter who can bat in any position. Samson is also a strong player of spin and pacer bowling. The right-hander has represented India in 25 T20Is, scoring 374 runs with the help of one half-century.
