The curtain fell on the 2023 Asia Cup as India lifted the coveted title for the eighth time after defeating Sri Lanka in the final. Now the attention swiftly turns to the premier 50-over tournament – the ODI World Cup, hosted by India. Previous edition finalists New Zealand and England will clash in the tournament opener on October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Ahead of the marquee event, the Black Caps have received a major blow as their veteran pacer Tim Southee remains in doubt for the competition following an injury. Southee was included in the 15-man squad, but the right-arm pacer reportedly fractured his right thumb while fielding during the final ODI against England, casting doubt on his participation in the World Cup.
In this article, we look at three players who can replace Tim Southee in the 2023 World Cup if he is ruled out.
1. Adam Milne
Adam Milne was one of the notable omissions from New Zealand’s 15-man squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup. Trent Boult’s return leaves Milne out of place in a pace attack that includes Southee, Lockie Ferguson and Matt Henry. Now, with a spot vacant, the 31-year-old pacer could be roped in as Southee’s replacement. As he has played in India in the past, New Zealand are likely to bring in Milne if their veteran seamer misses out.
2. Kyle Jamieson
Kyle Jamison is a good option for the Kiwis as he can contribute with his batting skills as well. Standing tall at 6 feet 6 inches, Jamieson can trouble the batters with his short balls and bouncers. The 29-year-old represented New Zealand in 11 ODIs and grabbed 12 wickets at an economy rate of 5.11. He also has the experience of playing in India in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
3. Scott Kuggeleijn
Scott Kuggeleijn’s name may not be heard much in international cricket, but the 31-year-old is a true pacer who can consistently bowl in the lower 140s. He can also contribute effectively to the team with his batting skills. The right-arm pacer has played just two ODIs for New Zealand and has taken five wickets at an economy rate of 4.14. In the shorter format, he has taken 16 wickets from 18 matches.
