3 players to watch out for from Australia’s squad

Australia being a favorite to win a multi-national tournament is nothing new and the trend will continue in the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in June. The 2021 champions recently announced their 15-man squad, which failed to feature some big names.

Veteran batter Steve Smith, young gun Jake Fraser-McGurk and experienced seamer Jason Behrendorff are among the notable absentees from the squad. Announcing the squad, Chairman of Selection George Bailey said Australia have a balanced team and are confident of a strong campaign.

While the mighty Pat Cummins will take the field as a bowler, Mitchell Marsh will lead the team in the marquee event. When it comes to big matches/tournaments, Australia are a powerhouse and we can expect heroics from them in the USA and West Indies. That being said, let’s take a look at three players who could grab attention at the mega event.

Here are three players to watch out for from Australia’s squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup

3. Mitchell Marsh

Mitchell Marsh

Mitchell Marsh has been playing the role of interim captain of Australia’s T20 team in recent times. The all-rounder has now been named Australia’s full-time T20I captain and is set to lead the side for the first time in a major tournament. Australia are currently the reigning champions in the Test and ODI formats thanks to the excellent captaincy of Pat Cummins.

Although Marsh has experience in a leadership role and will have the help of seasoned campaigners including Cummins, he will be challenged to maintain the legacy. The 32-year-old has played 54 T20Is and has scored 1432 runs including nine fifties at a strike rate of 135.3. The fast-bowling all-rounder has taken 17 wickets in this format.

2. Mitchell Starc

Mitchell Starc is currently having a horror campaign with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL). The most expensive player in the history of the league is now in the list of most expensive bowlers. The left-arm pacer has taken just seven wickets in eight matches, leaking runs at a concerning strike rate of 11.78 per over.

However, all these ominous signs will not bother the Australian management much. When it comes to international matches or tournaments, the 34-year-old is a different machine, who can pose a serious threat to the opponents with his blistering pace and swing deliveries. Starc has featured in 20 T20 World Cup matches and has picked up 27 wickets.

1. Travis Head

Travis Head

Travis Head is synonymous with the big match player. The Player of the Match for the World Test Championship final and the 2023 ODI World Cup, is currently in red-hot form in the 2024 IPL. The southpaw has amassed 338 runs in eight matches at an average of 42.25 and an incredible strike rate of 211.25.

The Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) opener has also hit a 39-ball hundred in the ongoing season. Known for his explosive start in the Powerplay, Australia will hope the southpaw continues his sublime form for the next two months. Head has played 26 T20Is for Australia and has scored 656 runs at a strike rate of 147.09.
