3 Players KKR should not have released ahead of IPL 2024 auction

The 2-time IPL champions have witnessed a very long dry spell in the league which has spurred the move of Gautam Gambhir back to KKR as mentor. They have retained the majority of their core but few players have been released. In this article, we will take a look at those 3 released players who could have helped KKR in making their title bid strong.

1. Lockie Ferguson

Lockie Ferguson

Lockie Ferguson would top this list as he is one of the most sought-after bowlers in T20 format across the globe. He has not been at his best but even his average phase as a bowler is better than most of the other bowlers which reflects on the quality that the Kiwi fast bowler possesses. Ferguson is a top-class death bowler and he has utility in multiple phases of the innings which makes him an asset for any team. It would be very difficult for KKR to buy him in the auction as a lot of teams would go for him which would result in a hike in valuation.

2. Shardul Thakur

Shardul Thakur

Kolkata has decided to release Shardul Thakur after a very short stint. The Indian international showed some glimpse of brilliance but then struggled with injury and form in the last season which has dented the trust of management in the player. However, Shardul is a utility player and he could have been a match-winner for KKR with both bat and ball. Players with multiple skills are a rarity in the game and releasing an all-rounder with vast IPL and international experience is a very debatable decision.

3. Shakib Al Hasan

Shakib Al Hasan has also been shown the exit by the management before the mini-auction. The Bangladesh skipper has been a pivotal player for the franchise in the past playing a huge role in KKR’s two glorious seasons in 2012 and 2014. There was a bad run of form through which Shakib was going but in the later part of the ODI World Cup, he displayed hints of a revival of form. As a temporary measure, Shakib’s retention could have helped Kolkata in the upcoming season.
