3 New Zealand players to watch out for in their clash against Papua New Guinea in T20 World Cup 2024

New Zealand’s quest for a title in the limited-overs format continues as they are eliminated from the T20 World Cup 2024. Afghanistan and West Indies have qualified for the Super Eight stage from Group C with three straight wins. The Black Caps are currently third on the points table with just one win from three matches.

Their bowlers put up a decent performance but the batters let them down. Kane Williamson and his team will play their final match against Papua New Guinea at the Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad on Monday, June 17. The game is of no importance to either team, but the Kiwis will be keen to end their campaign on a positive note.

Here are the 3 New Zealand players to watch out for in NZ vs PNG clash:

3. Glenn Phillips

Glenn Phillips

Glenn Phillips is currently New Zealand’s highest run-scorer with 48 runs from two innings. He played a crucial knock against West Indies with a 33-ball 40 but did not get enough support from the other end, resulting in their 13-run loss. Batting in the middle order, Phillips can easily adapt to situations and take on the role of anchor and finisher. Not to forget, he is also a handy off-spin bowler and a gun outfielder.

2. Tim Southee

Tim Southee

Tim Southee was adjudged Player of the Match against Uganda for his outstanding spell of 3/4 in four overs. The veteran pacer has taken five wickets in two innings so far in the tournament. The Southee is expected to wreak havoc against PNG in the upcoming encounter as the Brian Lara Stadium pitch is best suited for fast bowlers.

1. Trent Boult

Trent Boult

Trent Boult recently announced that the 2024 T20 World Cup will be his last appearance in the premier 20-over competition. The left-arm pacer will want to end it on a high note against PNG. Bout has been the stand out bowler for New Zealand in the tournament so far. He has taken seven wickets in three matches, including a three-wicket haul against West Indies. It will be interesting to see how the PNG openers deal with Boult’s new ball threat.
