Over the years in the ODI World Cup, the teams have made a lot of batting records. In the first few editions, the team didn’t score much as the game was played wearing white clothes and red ball. After the 1992 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the scoring rate and team totals started increasing. Meanwhile, in this listicle, we will have a look at three highest team totals in the tournament’s history
Three highest team totals in ODI World Cups
1. South Africa vs Sri Lanka in 2023
In the fourth game of the ongoing ODI WC 2023, the Lankan Lions won the toss and elected to bowl first. After the first few overs and the wicket of skipper Temba Bavuma, the former champions were made to rue this particular decision on a hot day (October 7) in Delhi.
Three batters, Quinton de Kock, Rassie van der Dussen, and Aiden Markram scored a hundred each (Markram scoring the fastest WC hundred), the team reached 428/5 at the end of the innings. In reply, the Lions fought well and reached 326 all-out, losing the game by 102 runs.
2. Australia vs Afghanistan in 2015
The Asian side played against Australia for the first time in ODI World Cups eight years back. In the Pool A game of the tournament, the Afghans won the toss and elected to bowl first. This decision turned out to be a disaster and it was a long day on the field for the Blue Brigade.
The home side amassed 417/6 with David Warner scoring 175 and Steve Smith and Glenn Maxwell missing out on their hundred. In reply, the Asian side was bowled out for 142 in 37.3 overs, losing the game by 275 runs.
3. India vs Bermuda
The two-time winners had a dreadful World Cup 16 years back. After losing to low-ranked Bangladesh and eventual finalists, Sri Lanka, the team bowed out of the tournament in the first round. However, in the only game they won in the tournament, they created history as they reached 400 for the first time in WCs.
In the game against Bermuda, the then Rahul Dravid-led side amassed 413/5 batting first. Virender Sehwag scored a hundred while Yuvraj Singh, Sourav Ganguly, and Sachin Tendulkar scored fifties. In reply, the then WC debutants only managed 156 all-out, losing the game by 257 runs
