3 franchises who can target Abdul Samad in IPL 2025 auction if he doesn't get retained

Examining three franchises likely to target Abdul Samad in the IPL 2025 auction. The 18th edition of the IPL is likely to be bigger than ever. From the quality of players to the budget, everything will go a notch higher. There is a lot of hype for the league already and the mega auction makes it a season to look forward to. Considering the constraints and scenarios, teams would want to retain their best players ahead of the mega auction.

That leaves successful teams wondering about their retention. Teams like KKR and SRH will have a difficult time retaining their players considering a lot of them performed well in the IPL 2024. Abdul Samad is one such batter who might not be retained by SRH due to the quality of players. It is time to look at the teams that could buy him if he doesn’t get retained.

1. Delhi Capitals

As a franchise, Delhi Capitals is known for investing in young and emerging talents. Abdul has been playing in the IPL since 2020. While he displayed flashes of brilliance in the debut season, he couldn’t deliver consistently from 2021 to 2023. 2024 came as a breath of fresh air where he finished the innings regularly.

Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi has changed a lot over the years. As it is mostly flat, Abdul might fancy himself a chance to finish the innings well. Given DC’s not-so-good finishing except for Tristan Stubbs, they would love to have someone like Samad who can make an impact lower down the order and bowl some overs if needed.

2. Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Much like Delhi, RCB has been a side with not-so-great finishers traditionally. Apart from Dinesh Karthik, RCB haven’t had great Indian finishers. They would love to invest in some Indian players. Not to forget, Samad has been scoring runs well and at an aggressive rate in domestic cricket in the ongoing season.

RCB’s Chinnaswamy stadium does not just have one of the flattest pitches but also has a ground with arguably the smallest dimensions among the IPL venues. When Samad batted at the venue earlier this year, he finished the innings well. Given RCB’s history of a lack of Indian finishers, they would love to have Samad in their squad.

3. Sunrisers Hyderabad

There is a good chance of SRH buying Samad back on their side, especially if the RTM card rule stays. They would not want to let go of the players who did well for them in the IPL 2024. It was the first instance of SRH qualifying for an IPL final since 2016. Abdul had a great season as a batter finishing the innings well.

In 12 innings in the season, Abdul scored 182 runs at a batting SR of 168.51. SRH might be forced to release him as there are better players in their lineup who can be retained. But at the auctions, SRH might try their best to get Samad back in the squad. They might now know the best way to use Samad.
