3 Forgotten West Indies players who featured in the 2019 ODI World Cup

One of the most prestigious trophies in the history of cricket is the ODI World Cup which is watched and loved by the majority of people who tend to follow the sport. West Indies used to be one of the fiercest sides which were feared by opponents due to the balance they had in their batting as well as bowling departments.

With the likes of some legendary players in their ranks, the Windies were kind of invincible but slowly and gradually the disputes between players and boards have resulted in players giving leagues more importance rather than international cricket. This is the major reason that the West Indies cricket failed to qualify for the World Cup 2023 as they showed a disappointing game of cricket. Let’s look at 3 Forgotten West Indies players who featured in the 2019 ODI World Cup;

1. Evin Lewis

Evin Lewis

Evin Lewis had a very promising start to his career in international cricket as his six-hitting ability was something that caught the eyes of many cricket fans as well as experts. The left-hand batter climbed up the ranks while playing age-group cricket for Trinidad & Tobago, as well as being part of a championship-winning Under-19 side in the year 2008.

But the 2019 World Cup was certainly not up to what the fans would have expected from him. The Southpaw batter failed miserably in the tournament as he managed to score 131 runs in five innings that he batted. It was on this performance, that the left-hand batter lost his place in the squad.

2. Carlos Brathwaite

Carlos Brathwaite is known for their terrific all-round ability and hitting sixes at will. Brathwaite came to light after his incredible innings in the 2016 T20 World Cup which earned him his spotlight. After that innings, the right-hand batter was a constant feature in the West Indies squad but after the ODI World Cup 2019, Brathwaite somewhere lost his place in the national side. In the eight matches which the 35-year-old played in the tournament, he was able to score only just 154 runs with one brilliant knock of 101 which almost saw West Indies over the line. But unfortunately, after that after the World Cup, Brathwaite disappeared after the Indian series.

3. Andre Russel

Andre Russel

Andre Russel is one of the fiercest players in T20 cricket but it is a fact that he has certainly not carried that form in One Day cricket. In a 50-over match against Ireland in June 2010, he made a name for himself by scoring 61 runs off just 34 balls while also taking 6 for 42. His performance allowed him to be selected for the 2011 West Indies World Cup team.

The event didn’t go as planned, but Russell’s skills were on display in June as he walked out at No. 9 to face recently crowned champion India and hammered 92 runs off 64 balls. But the World Cup 2019 did not go as expected as in four games that he played in the tournament, Russel scored just 36 runs and took just 5 wickets. The World Cup was the last match that the 35-year-old played in the ODI format.
