3 Forgotten Australian players who featured in the 2019 ODI World Cup

The ODI World Cup is certainly one of the major tournaments for every cricket player who wishes to represent the nation at the highest stage. The Australian team has been among the best teams in the history of the tournament and they are among the most consistent teams as well. The Australian team have won the title on the greatest number of occasions as the team have been successful in winning the all-important trophy a record five times.

But the World Cup is not the end of the road for any player as continuing to play for the national side post these major tournaments is also an equally hard task. The Australian team entered the 2019 edition of the World Cup as defending champions but the side faced a one-sided loss at the hands of the England team by eight wickets in the semifinal match.

Let’s look at 3 Forgotten Australian players who featured in the 2019 ODI World Cup;

1. Nathan Coulter-Nile

Nathan Coulter Nile is among the most gifted athletes from a land where the athletes tend to represent on national stages. With his ability to bat as well as ball, Coulter- Nile has provided a great combination for every side that he had played. In the 2019 edition of the ODI World Cup, the 35-year-old made a comeback from two back-to-back injuries.

In the limited opportunity that he received in the tournament, the bowling allrounder picked up four wickets in five matches he played and he even produced brilliant innings of 92 against the West Indies which eventually proved to be match-winning. But after the World Cup, the Western Australian player has been in and out of the team as well as his chances of representing the nation in the upcoming World Cup 2023 in India seem really dim.

2. Shaun Marsh

Another great Western Australian player who had represented the country on the biggest stage, Shaun Marsh is widely known for his elegant batting right from his very young age.  The star Australia batter received a chance to represent the national side in the 2019 edition of the World Cup in England but did not have a good outing as he was injured mid-way into the tournament.

But the World Cup also seems to have gone in a way that the southpaw would have expected as in the two matches he played in the tournament, the 40-year-old went on to score 26 runs which was certainly not as per his standards.

After that injury in the World Cup 2019, Marsh did not find his way back into the international circuit in any format.

3. Nathan Lyon

Arguably, one of the best-off spinners going around in current times, Nathan Lyon has certainly got what it takes to play any format in any particular venue. But, the 2019 edition of the World Cup was certainly one such tournament that eventually put a full stop to his white-ball career.

The off-spinner had a poor outing in the World Cup as in the four matches which he played for his national, the spin wizard only managed to pick up three wickets at a poor average of 60.33 and it is certainly after that tournament he has been refrained from representing the national side in ODI format.
