3 biggest positives from Sri Lanka’s campaign in ODI World Cup 2023

The Sri Lankan team has not been able to qualify for the knockouts of the World Cup and their qualification for the 2025 Champions Trophy is also out of question. This has been one of the worst World Cup campaigns for Sri Lanka and it would be difficult for Sri Lankan cricket to come out of this dark phase. However, there are positives for Sri Lanka from this tournament which they must build upon. Let’s take a look at 3 positives for Sri Lanka from the 2023 ODI World Cup.

No Dearth of talents

Sri Lanka

The results have not gone their way but there is no dearth of talent in Sri Lanka cricket, that is for sure. We have seen a glimpse of the talent that is available with the Sri Lankan team. Whether it is with the bat or ball. We will further delve into the individual positives but this potential that was on display must not be ignored. They can become a very formidable ODI side if a resolute leader can guide them through this journey.

Pathum Nissanka and Sadeera Samarawickrama

These two batters delivered for Sri Lanka with consistent performances. The duo could not convert their half-centuries into big knocks but their ability to absorb the pressure was quite evident. With a bit of temperament, they would be a treasure for Sri Lankan cricket in the long run. These two batters were a rarity in terms of building the innings and staying at the crease for a long time. In the times to come, they can emerge as the leaders of this batting unit.

Dilshan Madushanka

The left-arm pacer impressed everyone with his skill and he stood out for Sri Lanka in this World Cup. Madushanka bagged 21 wickets in 9 matches at an impressive average of 25. He dismissed some of the best batters playing in the tournament with the new ball. There was not much assistance for him from the other end which prevented him from making a huge impact on the results for Sri Lanka. One or two bowlers to compliment him with the ball is all that Sri Lanka needs to be a threatening side with the ball.
