Afghanistan (AFG) are set to clash against Papua New Guinea (PNG) in Match 29 of the 2024 T20 World Cup on Friday, June 14. After two remarkable victories in the first two matches, Afghanistan are just one win away from securing a berth in the Super Eights.
They opened the campaign with an emphatic 125-run win over Uganda, and in the next match, they demolished tournament favourites New Zealand by 84 runs. Uganda, on the other hand, have lost their first two matches and are on the brink of elimination from Group C. The Brian Lara Stadium in Tarouba, Trinidad supports both batters and bowlers, and Afghanistan is strong in both departments.
Here are the three Afghanistan players to watch out for in their match against PNG:
3. Rahmanullah Gurbaz
Afghanistan openers played a crucial role in their dream start. Rahmanullah Gurbaz has given the team a great start and scored big runs in both matches. He is in fact, currently the leading run-scorer in the tournament with 156 runs at an average of 78.00 and a strike rate of 154.46.
The right-hander smashed 76 runs against Uganda and 80 against New Zealand, forming an opening partnership of 100-plus runs in both matches. Gurbaz will be one of the main threats to Papua New Guinea in the upcoming match.
2. Rashid Khan
Rashid Khan has managed to maintain his reputation as one of the most dangerous spinners of the current era. The right-arm leg-spinner has taken six wickets in two matches, including a four-wicket haul against New Zealand, at an impressive economy rate. The Afghan skipper will once again aim to lead his team from the front. Not to forget, he can also chip in with some vital runs in the lower order.
1. Fazalhaq Farooqi
Fazalhaq Farooqi is the trump card of the Afghanistan team in this World Cup. The West Indies surface supports the fast bowlers well and Farooqi is on a roll. The left-arm pacer is currently the highest wicket-taker of the series with nine scalps from two matches at an average of 2.89.
He became the first bowler to take a fifer in the tournament when he tore through the Uganda batting line-up. It will be interesting to see how the Uganda batters tackle the new ball threat of Farooqi on Trinidad’s pace-friendly surface.
