The day of today (June 25) holds a very special significance in the history of Indian cricket, including India’s first-ever iconic World Cup win on June 25 1983. Besides this, the more historical significance of these days counts 92 years back on June 25, 1932, when the Indian team started their official journey in international cricket.

It was the day when Colonel CK Nayudu-led Indian team played the first-ever Test match by India at the highest level of the game. The match was hosted by the iconic Lord’s, the mecca of cricket. However, it didn’t mark a pleasant start for India as they faced a big 158-run defeat in their first-ever Test appearance.

Speaking of the action of the Match, the then-skipper of England, Douglas Jardine won the toss and decided to bat first; batting first, England were all out at the score of 259 runs; skipper Douglas Jardine and wicketkeeper-batter Les Ames scored 79 and 65 runs, respectively to take their team to a good total.

India failed to chase down the mammoth target against England’s bowling attack

Star India pacer Mohammad Nissar claimed a sensational five-wicket haul and became the first-ever Indian in Test history to scalp a five-wicket haul. Besides him, Amar Singh and skipper Nayudu also picked 2 wickets each.

In response to England’s 259, the Test debutants India were bundled out at the score of 189 runs, with skipper CK Nayudu being the highest run-scorer in the first innings, scoring 40 runs following 33 and 31 runs scored by Naoomal Jeoomal and Syed Wazir Ali.

Later in the second innings, England scored 275 runs for the loss of 8 wickets before declaring the innings and setting a target of 346 runs for India; the latter failed to chase down the target and were bundled out at the score of 187 runs, losing the game by a big margin of 158 runs.

The match ended in four days on June 28, 1932, and exactly 51 years after the day of this match’s start, India lifted their first-ever ODI World Cup title in 1983.
