Windies player tested positive for Covid-19, training sessions postponed

 

The West Indies cricket team’s initial training camp was going smoothly in St. Lucia. Initially, 30 people were called for practice there. But hard luck! The Caribbean training camp couldn’t escape from the ongoing Covid-19 epidemic. The 26-year-old Caribbean fast bowler Marquino Mindley has been tested positive for Covid-19. As a result, the training camp has been postponed.

South Africa is going to play a Test series in the Caribbean after several years. For that purpose, the West Indies Cricket Board had organized a training camp in St. Lucia. But because of Covid-19, there was a big push in this camp of Jason Holders and Co. from the beginning.

The Jamaican fast bowler, Mindley was sent to his hotel room in isolation after his Covid-19 test report was positive. According to the rules of the St. Lucia government, Mindley must remain in isolation until his two consecutive test reports are negative. In this situation, the young bowler will be under the supervision of the doctors of the West Indies cricket team.

A statement from the West Indies Cricket Board stated, “On Friday 21st of May, all members of the team associated with the Red Ball team’s training camp in St. Lucia had undergone RT-PCR test for Covid-19. Jamaican fast bowler Marquino Mindley tested positive in his second test. He has since been sent to isolation but has no symptoms.

However, the coaching staff of the team and the rest of the members were re-examined but no one’s report came positive. According to the West Indies Cricket Board, a total of 43 people, including cricketers and assistant coaches, have already been vaccinated against Covid-19 to avoid the risk. Moreover, even though the training camp for the weekend has been canceled, the cricketers will start training again from May 24 in small groups.

The 2-match Test and 5-match T20 series between the West Indies and South Africa will start on June 10, the Test match will take place first. The second Test of the series will be held on June 18. The matches of the 5-match T20 series will be played on June 27, 28, 30, and July 2 and 4.
