WI vs ZIM (Match 08) – Highlights
West Indies and Zimbabwe met in the 8th match of the T20 World Cup on Wednesday. Batting first in the match, West Indies set a good target. But in pursuit of that target, Zimbabwe collapsed before the allotted 20 overs were over. As a result, they have to leave the field with a loss. Along with that, Alzarri Joseph won the man of the match title by bowling brilliantly for West Indies.
West Indies got off to a good start after winning the toss in Hobart. At one time West Indies scored 77 runs for 2 wickets. Kyle Mayers scored 13 off 12 balls with 2 fours and Evin Lewis scored 15 off 18 balls with 1 four. After that, Nicholas Pooran’s team was in danger after losing 4 more wickets to get 11 more runs from 90.
Opener Johnson Charles scored the most runs for them. He played an innings of 45 runs off 36 balls with the help of 3 fours and 2 sixes. Although Johnson Charles played an innings of 45 runs, none of Nicholas Pooran (7), Shamarh Brooks (0), and Jason Holder (4) could make any difference.
6 wickets were lost for 101 runs. 14 overs have been played then. It became difficult for the West Indies to mount a fighting collection.
Then on the seventh wicket, Rovman Powell and Akeal Hossain’s pair of 49 runs off 35 balls saved the West Indies from danger. Powell was dismissed for 28 off 21 balls with 2 balls left in the innings. And also hit one four and 2 sixes. He hit two sixes in that over. Akeal remained unbeaten on 23 runs off 18 balls. His innings of 23 runs had 2 fours. Odean Smith was also unbeaten on 1 run.
In the end, the Caribbean made a challenging capital of 153 runs for 7 wickets with 17 extra runs. In other words, to win, Zimbabwe had to make 154. Sikandar Raja of Zimbabwe took 3 wickets for 19 runs. Blessing Muzrabani took 2 wickets for 38 runs. Besides, Sean Williams took 1 wicket.
An unexpected loss to Scotland in the first match. The World Cup started with a big defeat of 42 runs for the two-time world champions West Indies. That’s why the second match against Zimbabwe was very important for them. On the other hand, Zimbabwe got a great victory in the first match. They were aiming to go ahead in the second match after opening with a thrashing of Ireland.
But Zimbabwe could not sustain the performance of the first match at Hobart’s Bellerive Oval. West Indies also did not want to show the performance of the first match. In the end, they were successful. The Caribbean retained its position in the World Cup by defeating Zimbabwe by 31 runs using Alzarri Joseph and Jason Holder’s bowling.
As a result of this victory, all four teams in Group ‘B’ have equal 2 points. West Indies, Zimbabwe, Ireland, and Scotland – 2 points each. The two teams who win the last match will advance to the Super Twelve. In the final match, Ireland will take on the West Indies and Scotland will face Zimbabwe.
Chasing the target of 154, Zimbabwe was all out for 122 in 18.2 overs. The two openers, Wesley Madhevere and Regis Chakabva started fairly well. They made a pair of 29 runs in 14 balls. But when Chakabva got out after scoring 13 runs from 9 balls, Zimbabwe’s innings collapsed.
Tony Munyonga is out for 2 runs, Sean Williams was out for 1 run. Zimbabwe’s hopes ended when Sikandar Raja, the current star of the team, was dismissed for 14 off 8 balls. Milton Shuba was dismissed for 2 runs. Then Ryan Burl’s 17 and Luke Jongwe’s 29 runs gave some hope but could not do the winning job. None of the rest of the batters could touch double figures. As a result, Zimbabwe lost to West Indies.
Alzarri Joseph took 4 wickets with 16 runs in 4 overs for West Indies. Jason Holder took 3 wickets with 12 runs in 3.2 overs. Akeal Hossain, Obed McCoy, and Odean Smith took 1 wicket each.
