WI vs SCO (Match 03) – Highlights

This year’s T20 World Cup is witnessing one upset after another. In the opening match of the tournament, Namibia defeated the Asian champions, Sri Lanka by a good margin of 55 runs. This time, Scotland defeated the two-time champions, West Indies by 42 runs. This is the first victory for the Scottish against the Caribbeans.

It rained in the middle of the match. Before that, Scotland had a great start. The two openers took the team’s score to 50 in the power play. But after the game resumed after rain, they went on the back foot. Still, Scotland scored a challenging total against the Windies, riding on George Munsey’s unbeaten fifty.

Chasing the target of 161 runs to win, West Indies lost Kyle Mayers in the third over who was in rhythm. West Indies scored 20 runs when Mayers returned with Munsey’s catch off Josh Davey. Mayers scored all of those runs off 13 balls.

Even after Mayers left, Evin Lewis and Brandon King tried to keep the run pace going. The 23-run partnership between the two broke in 5.5 overs when Lewis got out. West Indies’s score was 54 when Lewis was dismissed for 14 runs off 13 balls.

After the dismissal of Lewis, the Caribbeans started to fall apart. Losing 6 wickets within 21 runs, the scoreboard of West Indies went from 58 runs for 2 wickets to 79 runs for 8 wickets. After that, Jason Holder built up resistance with Odean Smith.

But when Smith returned to the dressing room, their 23-run partnership was broken. After that, the pair of Holder and Obed McCoy only managed to reduce the margin of defeat. They were all out for 118 runs in 18.3 overs.

Mark Watt was Scotland’s best bowler in the match. He took the highest number of 3 wickets conceding only 12 runs in 4 overs. Michael Leask and Brad Wheal picked up two wickets each. Josh Davey and Safyaan Sharif got one wicket each.

Earlier, West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran invited Scotland to bat first after winning the toss. Scotland’s two openers George Munsey and Michael Jones got off to a great start. They scored 52 runs in 5.3 overs at Bellerive Oval in Hobart. Then it started to rain.

In a short time, the rain stopped, and the game started again on the field. It seemed that the rhythm of the two Scottish batsmen was a little less. They managed to score 54 runs in 6 overs of power play. West Indies veteran bowler Jason Holder got to bowl for the first time in this match on the seventh over. The Caribbean pacer bowled Michael Jones in his second ball. Jones scored 20 off 17 balls with three boundaries before his departure.

Then Matthew Cross (3) returned to the pavilion in Holder’s next over. Captain Richie Berrington tried to play aggressively. But he also got out hitting 1 six, he made 16 runs off 14 balls. Calum MacLeod scored 23 off 14 balls, Michael Leask got 4, and Chris Greaves remained unbeaten on 16 runs playing 11 balls. With the help of George Munsey’s eighth fifty of his career, Scotland scored 160 runs in 20 overs.

For West Indies, Jason Holder and Alzarri Joseph scalped the highest number of 2 wickets each. Odean Smith also took 1 wicket for them.
