Virat Kohli has announced his desire about staying away from captaincy in the Indian Premier League (IPL) once finishing this edition of IPL soon after announcing that he will step down as captain of the Indian cricket team in the T20 format after the forthcoming ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
In a video message on the opening day of the second leg of the 14th edition of the IPL on Sunday, Kohli said that he would not be captaining from next season. However, as long as he plays in the IPL, the most successful batsman in the history of the tournament has promised to play for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
He said that he has been under a lot of pressure for many years. To reduce that, he recently announced his resignation from the leadership of the Indian T20 team. He will continue to be committed to the rest of his responsibilities.
He added that he has gone through an extraordinary journey of 9 years of joy, pain, and despair. He thanked everyone from the bottom of his heart for their unconditional and unwavering support and for keeping trust in him. But it’s just a break. He also said that this is not the end of the journey, this journey will continue.
As a captain, Kohli could not only win the IPL title. However, he is the best among the captains with the bat. In the tournament, Kohli has so far won 62 of the 132 matches that he has captained. The best success was reaching the final in 2016. Kohli’s Bangalore team lost to Sunrisers Hyderabad at that instance.
He has so far scored 6076 runs with the bat in hand, playing with an average of 37.97 and a strike rate of 130.41. As a captain, Kohli has scored 4674 runs at an average of 43.27 with 5 centuries and 33 half-centuries, and a strike rate of 134.11, which no other batsman or captain could do till now.
