Johnson Charles’ scintillating half-century powered the West Indies to a comprehensive eight-wicket win against a hapless South African side in Kingston, Jamaica on Monday, May 27, in the third and final T20I. With this one-sided victory, the two-time T20 World Cup champions completed a 3-0 whitewash of the Proteas.

Rassie van der Dussen won the toss and opted to bat first on a pitch that looked quite good for batting. However, the in-form Reeza Hendricks fell cheaply in the second over, as he mistimed a pull off Shamar Joseph’s bowling. Ryan Rickelton hit a flurry of boundaries before being dismissed for 18 in the last over of powerplay. The experienced Quinton de Kock struggled to find his timing and became Gudakesh Motie’s victim in the seventh over. The left-arm spinner took the wicket of Matthew Breetzke in his next over, as the visitors were tottering at 50/4 in the ninth over.

Van der Dussen played a captain’s knock under pressure and stitched a much-needed 77-run stand with Wiaan Mulder off 49 balls to resurrect the innings. The latter departed in the 17th over, as South Africa reached 127. Van der Dussen went on to score his eighth T20I half-century before being dismissed in the 19th over. Patrick Kruger hit a couple of boundaries towards the end, as South Africa finished on 163/7 in their 20 overs.

Johnson Charles pulverises Proteas bowlers to make light work of the run-chase

After failing to fire in the first couple of games, Johnson Charles put the South African bowlers to the sword, helping the hosts get to 49/0 in the first three overs. The 35-year-old reached his half-century in the sixth over off just 19 balls. West Indies scored 83/0 in the powerplay and brought the required run-rate below six. Charles departed in the seventh over, after playing a breathtaking knock of 69 runs off 26 balls, amassing nine fours and five sixes.

Skipper Brandon King played some delightful strokes before being dismissed by Gerald Coetzee for a 28-ball 44. Kyle Mayers showed his big-hitting prowess, hitting four sixes in his knock of 36 not out off 23 balls, as the Caribbean side won with eight wickets and 37 balls to spare. Charles was fittingly adjudged Player of the Match. Meanwhile, Motie won the Player of the Series award, after finishing as the leading wicket-taker, with eight scalps in the series.
