Australia started their full-fledged United Kingdom tour with the first T20I against Scotland at the Grange Cricket Club in Edinburgh on 4th September. The visitors won the toss and opted to bowl first. Thanks to George Munsey’s 28 runs off 16 balls, Scotland were 52 for two in 5.4 overs. Brandon McMullen contributed 19 off 15 as Richie Berrington and Matthew Cross kept run rate in check with their 23 off 20 and 27 off 21 respectively.

Other than Mark Watt and Jack Jarvis no other batter could pitch in down the order. The duo amassed 16 off 13 and 10 off 8 respectively. For Australia, Sean Abbott picked three wickets as Xavier Bartlett and Adam Zampa pitched in with two scalps each. The hosts put in a decent total of 154 for 9 at the end of 20 overs.

Chasing a gettable target, the visitors lost Jake Fraser-McGurk on the third delivery of the first over. On the other end, Travis Head unleashed mayhem as he scored three boundaries in the subsequent over off Brad Wheal. He then fetched 20 runs off McMullen’s over and made Charlie Cassell leak 14 runs in three balls he faced in the fourth over.

Head unleashes fireworks

Wheal was brought in to end the powerplay, and Head reminded everyone of his Sunrisers Hyderabad antics in the IPL, scoring 26 runs. Australia were 113 at the end of six overs, the highest powerplay score in T20Is. Mark Watt switched off Head show as the batters walked back scoring 80 off 25 with a strike rate of 320. Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis supported ably scoring 39 off 12 and unbeaten 27 off 13 as Australia reached the target in just 9.4 overs.
