Twitter Reactions: Struggling South Africa no match to power giants India in Chennai Test

South Africa were no match to India in the one-off Test at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Batting first, the India reigned supreme, hitting 603/6d in the first innings. Openers Smriti Mandhana (149) and Shafali Varma (205) looked flawless as their opening partnership of 292 runs set the tone. Mandhana made 149 runs while Varma went to score a double century.

After they got out, things were expected to slow down, but the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side was in no mood. Jemimah Rodrigues made 55 runs, while Kaur and Richa Ghosh contributed with 69 and 86, respectively. South African bowlers failed to understand and adapt to the conditions as India seemed favourites to win the game after the first innings itself.

In the second innings, Sneh Rana had a phenomenal outing. The 30-year-old picked up eight wickets in the innings, which demolished the opposition’s batting unit. The visiting side looked strong in patches but failed to deliver as a unit, which put them on the back foot. Towards the end, wickets fell like a house of cards, as they were bundled for 266 runs, and were enforced a Follow-On.

Skipper Laura Wolvaardt and Sune Luus showed a lot of character in the third innings to bail South Africa out of trouble. Both hit a century each as they looked good in the third innings. However, after both cricketers got out, things got difficult in the middle. Nadine de Klerk tried her best to finish the game on level terms but she barely received support from the other end. The 24-year-old made 61 runs as South Africa posted 373 runs on the board, setting up a target of 37 runs.

It was too easy for India in the fourth innings. Shafali opened alongside Shubha Satheesh and got the job done comfortably. The double-centurion from the first innings finished it off in a hurry as India won the match by 10 wickets. With that, India now picked up Test wins against England, Australia and South Africa in a span of seven months.

INDIA WINS.

India defeats South Africa by 10 wickets in the only test. Extending their dominant streak against the Proteas in red ball cricket. A very competitive game, where Saffers fought back and took it to the last session.
