Sri Lanka defeated Thailand by 10 wickets to qualify for the semi-finals of the ongoing Women’s Asia Cup 2024. The Chamari Athapaththu-led side once again had a strong outing with both bat and bowl and produced a compact performance to get the job done at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium in Dambulla.

Batting first, Thailand struggled to get going. Veteran opener Nattaya Boochatham departed in the first ball itself. Aphisara Suwanchonrathi and Nannapat Koncharoenkai tried to stitch a partnership but the prior got out after scoring 12 runs. Nannapat however kept the scoreboard ticking. She barely got any support from the other end and proved to be a one-woman army. The 23-year-old made 47 runs off 53 deliveries, as Thailand posted a respectable score of 93 runs in the first innings.

Among Sri Lankan bowlers, Kavisha Dilhari had a decent outing as she picked up two wickets, giving away just 13 runs in his four overs. Achini Kulasuriya, Sugandika Kumari, Inoshi Priyadharshani and captain Athapaththu picked up one wicket each.

When it came to the chase, it was all too easy for the hosts. Athapaththu and Vishmi Gunaratne looked rock solid as they got the job done with absolute ease. None of Thailand’s plans worked against them as Sri Lanka picked up a comfortable win. Athapathu, who recently became the first women’s cricketer to hit a century in the T20 Asia Cup, made 49* runs off 35 balls while 18-year-old Gunaratne made 39* runs off 34 deliveries.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will play Pakistan in the second semi-final of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024. On the other hand, Harmanpreet Kaur-led India will be playing Bangladesh. Both semi-finals will be played on July 26, with the final scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 28 in Dambulla.

Notably, X, formerly known as Twitter, was buzzing with Sri Lanka’s 10-wicket victory over Thailand.
