The Kotambi Stadium, in Vadodara, hosted the first ODI of India Women, who squared off against the West Indies. The Indian team won the game by 211 runs and registered their second biggest win in the format, prevailing the visitors in every department.

After winning the toss, the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side batted first and put on a big total in the first innings with Smriti Mandhana being the star batter once again scoring 91 from just 102 deliveries. Apart from her, there were some handful contributions from youngsters Pratika Rawal (40 of 69), and Harleen Deol (44 of 50). Apart from the five-wicket haul from Zaida James, it was a struggle for the Windies’ bowlers, which resulted in them getting a massive target of 315 to chase down.

The tourists failed miserably with the bat, facing a terrible collapse. The Indian bowlers were making things difficult for the West Indians. Renuka Singh Thakur was the pick of the bowlers, who took her first five-wicket haul in Women’s ODIs with a great display of seam and swing bowling. The West Indies were finally bowled out for 103 as the India Women took the lead in the three-match ODI series.

For her stupendous display with the ball, Renuka was also adjudged the Player of the Match, making her maiden fifer truly a memorable one.

“The team motivates me. Harman (Kaur) asked me if I wanted to bowl, and my confidence also grew as the wickets fell. We did some spot bowling yesterday because it is important for ODIs. We concentrated on single-wicket balls, I spoke to Jhulan Goswami as well, and she helped me with it. Difficult for bowlers as lines and lengths are different (to T20 cricket), that’s why we practice. Whatever we practice, that’s what gets executed,” the pacer said.
