Hosts India were in trouble after losing three quick wickets towards the end of Day 1. On a spin-friendly deck, batting wasn’t easy on the following day as well but the ‘Gabba heroes’ Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant stitched a formidable partnership of 96 runs that brought the hosts back into the game. The keeper-batter played an aggressive brand of cricket, scoring 60 runs off 59 deliveries while Gill went on to score 90 runs.
He took time to settle down but kept the scoreboard ticking and that helped India post 263 runs on the board, Towards the end, Washington Sundar played a very important knock of unbeaten 38 runs off 36 deliveries, which included two sixes and four boundaries. India managed a 28-run lead in the first innings but that could have been more if Akash Deep hadn’t thrown his wicket towards the end.
However, the pacer redeemed quickly by picking up the wicket of Tom Latham in the very first over. Since then, the spinners have taken over and dominated the Kiwi batters. The ball was turning squares and the spin maestros Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja took complete advantage of that as the visitors looked extremely uncomfortable.
Will Young played a very good knock of 51 runs but other than that, none of the batters could contribute much. Glenn Phillips looked good but he too departed after scoring 26 runs off 14 deliveries. Notably, Ashwin picked up a three-wicket haul while Jadeja clinched four wickets on Day 2, as New Zealand posted 171/9.

New Zealand are leading by 143 runs and India would be optimistic to get the job done on Day 3. Ajaz Patel and Willaim ORourke are on the crease and would be hoping to contribute a few more runs but it won’t be easy against the Indian spin duo, who wreaked havoc on Day 2.
Here’s how the fans reacted to Day 2 of the IND vs NZ 3rd Test:
For starters, the batting coach could slowly introduce the Ind batters to the wonders of back foot play v spinners. Will make survival easier, so also run scoring. Barring Pant, all main batters got out to spin while on front foot. #INDvNZ

The champion is indeed back! 🤞
Ravichandran Ashwin has just dismissed Will Young, catching him off his own bowling, and New Zealand is now struggling at 150/8 . This is a huge wicket for India, and Ashwin is proving once again why he’s one of the best spinners in the game. pic.twitter.com/xl4qV6dTL7
