Thankfully, the rain stayed away during Day 2 of the third Test between India and Australia at the Gabba in Brisbane as cricket enthusiasts witnessed some riveting action. The trio of Travis Head, Steve Smith, and Jasprit Bumrah played key roles.

Bumrah got the tourists off to a fantastic start as he dismissed the Aussie openers inside the first half hour on Sunday, December 15.  Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith joined forces and tried to bat with a great deal of caution. They formed a 37-run partnership off 89 balls before Labuschagne was dismissed for 12 off 55 balls.

The in-form Travis Head, who scored a century in the previous Test in Adelaide, forged a scintillating 241-run partnership alongside Steve Smith. This incredible partnership came off only 302 deliveries. Head showed a lot of positive intent as he always does, and Smith looked more settled as his knock progressed. The former Austrian captain departed soon after scoring his 33rd Test century. Bumrah got him out, as well as the duo of Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head with the second new ball.

Head raced to his ninth Test century and third against India off just 115 deliveries.  He was eventually dismissed for a breathtaking innings of 152 off 160 balls. Marsh departed for a low score as the hosts went from 316/3 to 327/6. Rohit Sharma would have felt that his bowlers would be able to restrict Australia below 350. However, that wasn’t to be, as Alex Carey and skipper Pat Cummins put on an important 56-run partnership.

Bumrah bagged a five-for, but he didn’t receive much support from his fellow pacers. Mohammed Siraj and Nitish Kumar Reddy picked up one wicket each, but the senior most pacer finished with figures of 5/72 in 25 overs. Akash Deep looked threatening but couldn’t open his account. Ravindra Jadeja was the most expensive bowler for India on Day 2 as he conceded runs at an economy rate of 4.80.

Alex Carey (45*) and Mitchell Starc (7*) remained unbeaten at the crease at Stumps. They will look to take Australia past the 450-run mark first up on Day 3. Australia are placed at 405 for the loss of seven wickets.
