England outsmarted Tom Latham’s New Zealand convincingly in the first Test of the three-match series at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch. After winning the toss, the visitors opted to field first and bundled the opposition to 348 runs. New Zealand’s batting was powered by Latham’s 47, Kane Williamson’s 93, and Glenn Phillips’ 58. For the Three Lions’, pacer Brydon Carse and spinner Shoaib Bashir were wreckers in chiefs with the ball, sharing eight wickets between them.
In reply, England’s batters put on an impactful performance as they got a massive 151-run lead after being bowled out for 499. For the visitors, Harry Brook’s 171 stole the spotlight. Other batters also made some effective contributions. For the hosts, the pacers claimed all 10 wickets.
In their second innings, the BlackCaps had a shaky start losing their openers in quick succession. But Williamson along with Daryl Mitchell steadied the sinking ship. Both the right-handers tried to build a big partnership but the England bowlers wreaked havoc. Apart from these two none of the the other Kiwi batters made significant contributions, which ultimately led to the side being restricted to 254.
Day 4 saw the England batters chase down the easy target with the help of Jacob Bethell’s 50 as the side won the game by 8 wickets. Carse was awarded the Player of the Match for picking 10 wickets in the whole game, including a six-fer in the second innings. Kiwis lead the three-match series by 1-0 with the next game being played at Wellington.
