After finishing Day 1 on 80/0, India openers Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal continued from where they had left off. India’s dominance continued even on Day 2 as the opening duo kept piling up runs slowly and steadily. Though the scoring rate was slow, the West Indies bowlers failed to stop the hosts from hitting runs.
It was a memorable outing for Jaiswal on Day 2 as he got his maiden half-century on debut. Rohit and Jaiswal added 66 runs in the first session as India were 146/0 at Lunch. Jaiswal made the most of the second session, and took charge of the batting, thereby eventually reaching the nervous nineties. The duo, in the 69th over, brought up their 200-run partnership as India’s lead extended to 50.
The partnership between the duo went down in history as the highest by any Indian opening pair against West Indies in Test cricket. Soon, Jaiswal reached the three-figure mark and notched up a magnificent century, becoming just the 17th Indian cricketer, and just the third opening batter, to score a century on Test debut.
Notably, Jaiswal became the first-ever Indian opener to score a ton on Test debut away from home, and while he celebrated the feat, the pressure kept piling up on the hosts. The Indian skipper joined the celebrations soon, as he got to his 10th Test century, and his 44th overall, to further strengthen India’s lead over the West Indies.
Rohit’s celebrations didn’t last long as he was dismissed on 103(221) when debutant Alick Athanaze picked up his maiden Test wicket and broke the 229-run partnership between the new Indian opening par. Shubman Gill, who had demoted himself to No. 3 for this game, failed to put up a show in his new role and was dismissed cheaply for an 11-ball six.
While Jaiswal looked set and strong, Virat Kohli joined the youngster on the crease, and the duo sailed through till the end of the day. Kohli played a composed knock and hit 36* off 96 deliveries while mostly dealing in singles and doubles. Jaiswal (143* off 350) and Kohli built the innings beautifully thereon and shared an unbeaten 72-run partnership for the third wicket as India closed Day 2 comfortably on 312/2.

WI falling into a common trap. Bowling spinners because the ball is turning. Bowl your best bowlers most, no matter what. That’s Kemar, Alzarri & Holder.
