Day 3 of the first Test between Pakistan and Bangladesh at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium saw the visitors having a decent outing with the bat as they narrowed down the deficit.

Bangladesh started the day at 27/0, with overnight batters Shadman Islam and Zakir Hasan at the crease. Hosts struck early as they dismissed Hasan at the score of 12. Skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto also fell cheaply after adding just 16 runs to the tally.

Thereon, opener Islam and Mominul Haque stitched a handy 94-run partnership before Haque found himself walking back to the dressing, courtesy of a brilliant delivery by Khurram Shahzad. The southpaw scored a fine half-century, lacing his innings with five boundaries.

Islam then partnered with veteran batter Mushfiqur Rahim to further reduce the arrears. The left-handed opener put up a crucial stand of 52 runs but fell seven runs short of a well-deserved century. In his 183-ball stay, he smashed 12 boundaries and played at a strike rate of 50.81.

Just as the visitors were recovering from Islam’s dismissal, all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan also fell cheaply at the score of 15. Meanwhile, Rahim held one end strongly and put on a much-needed partnership of 98 runs with wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das. Bangladesh will have a sigh of relief as they ended Day 3 with the score standing at 316/5 and are trailing by 132 runs. Both Rahim (55*) and Das (52*) are still on the crease and will continue their innings on the following day.

As for Pakistan, Shahzad was the wrecker-in-chief with the ball, finishing with figures of 2/47. Naseem Shah, Mohammad Ali, and Saim Ayub were the other bowlers to pick one wicket each.
