Day 4 of the first Test of the series played between Pakistan (PAK) and England (ENG) in Multan, turned out to be a run-fest as Joe Root and Harry Brook unleashed mayhem. The duo continued where they left on Day 3, and Root notched up 262 runs before getting dismissed. His wicket brought an end to the longstanding 454-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

This was the highest partnership ever against Pakistan in Test cricket. Overtaking West Indies pair, Conrad Hunte and Sir Garry Sobers’ 446-run stand in 1958. Brook went on to score his maiden triple century and is only the second batter to notch up a triple century in Multan. He ended his innings on 317 off 322 balls and England declared on 823/7 with a lead of 264.

For Pakistan, amidst the batting rage, Naseem Shah and Saim Ayub picked two wickets each. Shaheen Afridi, Aamer Jamal, and Agha Salman pitched in with one wicket each. When the hosts came out to bat, they dealt with an early blow losing Abdullah Shafique on the very first ball of the inning. Shan Masood (11) followed suit and Babar Azam (5) continued his poor form with the bat in Tests.

Saim Ayub (25) showed some resilience and Mohammad Rizwan (10) was cleaned up by Brydon Carse. Saud Shakeel (29) kept the grind on but was outdone by Jack Leach. With him gone, Pakistan were reeling at 82 for six within the 25th over. Agha Salman and Aamer Jamal saw through the remainder of the session and Pakistan trail by 115 runs at Stumps on Day 4. For England, Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse dazzled with two wickets each.
